What is Reformer Pilates?

What is Reformer Pilates?

Slow, controlled exercise that builds strength from the inside out, gentle on the joints and right for every age.

The method

Strength you can feel in everyday life.

Pilates is a method of slow, controlled exercise that strengthens the deep muscles around your spine, hips and core.

Each movement is done with attention to breath, alignment and control. Because nothing is rushed or jarring, it is low impact and suits people who want to get stronger without strain, including those with stiff backs or old injuries.

The equipment

Three ways to work

Every session uses a mix of these, chosen for your body and goals.

A Reformer in the Sépilates studio, lit by candles and soft shelf lights

The Reformer

A sliding carriage on springs. The springs add resistance to make muscles work, or support to make a movement easier.

The Cadillac and a Reformer side by side in the Sépilates studio

The Cadillac

A frame with bars, straps and springs for assisted stretching and strength work, lying or seated.

The Mat

Bodyweight exercises for control and mobility, which you can also practise at home.

The benefits

What Pilates can do for you

Core strength and stability

A strong centre supports everything you do, from carrying shopping to a round of golf.

Better posture, a happier back

Strengthen the muscles that hold you upright. Many people find it eases the stiffness of long days sitting.

Mobility and flexibility

Move your spine, hips and shoulders through a fuller range, gently and at your own pace.

Balance and coordination

Controlled single-leg and standing work helps you feel steadier and more sure-footed.

Gentle on your joints

Low impact and supported by springs, so you build real strength without strain.

Calm and confidence

Focused breathing and fifty minutes that are entirely yours.

Recovery and pregnancy

Pilates for injury recovery, rehabilitation and pregnancy.

Because every session at Sépilates is private, it can take a more considered approach than a group class.

Sessions can support rehabilitation-focused movement, injury management and post-recovery, with exercises adapted to what your body can do today and guidance from your GP or physiotherapist where needed. Pilates is not medical treatment, but controlled, supported movement can help you rebuild strength and confidence.

During pregnancy and after birth, pre and postnatal Pilates is adapted to each stage, helping you stay strong and return to movement gently. Read more about Sepideh's approach or see the frequently asked questions.

Reformer and Mat

Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates, explained.

Reformer Pilates uses a sliding carriage and adjustable springs to build strength, improve alignment and control, with resistance that can challenge or support you.

Mat Pilates uses your own bodyweight to strengthen, lengthen and reconnect with your body, focusing on control, mobility, stability and quality of movement.

Most sessions at Sépilates combine the two, along with the Cadillac, so the work suits your body and goals. See sessions and prices, or book your first session.
